Asparagus prevents hangovers, study

Going out for a few drinks with your friends? Grill up some asparagus to have on hand for the morning after. Korean researchers have discovered that extracts from the leaves and shoots of asparagus boost the levels of key enzymes that break down alcohol after drinking.

According to the study, eating asparagus before or after drinking helps break down and metabolize ethanol quickly and efficiently.

Asparagus extract was added to liver cells, and researchers found that its high amino acid count stimulated two key enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), which accelerated the breakdown of alcohol in the body.

The moral? When beer is on tap, have asparagus for dinner before and breakfast after. Simple.
