BMW to roll out electric car
Bayerische Motoren Werke announced on Friday the details surrounding Germany’s first factory to mass-produce battery-powered cars.
With an investment of 400 million euros ($561 million), they’ll be supplying the funds to 2013.
The production will occur in a location that is already creating verisons of the 1 Series model. The new vehicle, named Megacity, will be starting its production in Leipzig.
BMW is the latest large carmaker to begin to produce an electric car, and has already started its marketing campaign far before it is ready. Although this lacks a prototype, we have seen sketches.
According to a recent article in the NYTimes, this is new territory for the popular car company. “We have never been this open about an ongoing development process. We sense a hunger for information,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW’s head of design.
BMW has decided on their basic design of the car and will soon begin road-testing prototypes.
